Here, too, may be found snakes and monkeys, gliding urts, leaf urts, squirrels, climbing, long-tailed porcupines, lizards, sloths, and the usual varieties of insects, ants, centipedes, scorpions, beetles, and flies, and so on. "Panther" ~ the panther occurs in both species, the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the leopard (Panthera pardus). It is difficult to decide, whether the "panther" was a leopard or a jaguar. Differences are to be recognized best by the statue. The jaguar is built more strongly. They can also be well ditiguished by their head. But the easiest way is to see them in their typical habitat. The jaguar lives in South America and you will find the leopard in Africa and Asia. ;-)
How do they get their black fur?
~ it is hereditary with jaguars dominant. Depending on situation of light the "panther" appears completely black or it draws for marks of the coat off. (except when you will meet it in the night. *gg*)
~ the black coloration of the leopards is passed on rezessiv, also called "melanism(?)". The typical coat pattern becomes visible under bright light.
"Basically, the fur color is determined by pigment cells (Melanocyten) which lay beneath the skin. They produce so called melanine, which is transported to the hair. There are two kinds: Eumelanine, which turns the hair brown to black and Phaeomelanine, which causes a reddish color. Animals that suffer melanism produce more melanine, but if you look hard, you'll recognize the typical pattern." (Link: Why are jaguares spotted and tigers striped)

Urt The urt of Gor is a rodent, as common as the rat on earth! Some urts are small, horned rodents small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Others are giant, the size of wolves or ponies, sleek and white with three rows of needlelike teeth, tusks and two horns protruding from over the eyes. Some varieties of urts are: tiny, brown prairie urts; giant canal urts, some which are web-footed; small, furred forest urts about the size of a cat or small dog; tiny brush urts; small port urts; river urts; long-haired ship urts; four-toed leaf urt, tree urts, gliding urts and hut urts of Schendi. The unpleasing slave is quite frequently threatened with being thrown to the canal urts. The giant urt can be domesticated and trained to track and kill. The urt is used to torture during interrogations. They were also used for medical experiments. The extract from the glands of the Cartius river urt is used to make perfume! Quite the versatile beast.

ant -
known in the jungles of Schendi as 'The Marchers' are these aggressive carnivorous insects. Each is about 2 inches long, with a shiny black exoskeleton and two antennae. Their name is derived from their, apparently seasonal, marches through the jungle in a single column, yards wide and pasangs in length. They may number in the millions, their path's widening to as much as 500 feet when they overtake, swarm over, and devour all flesh, living or dead, in their path. Their bite is extremely painful, but not poisonous. Their victims die from being weakened from relentless attack, being overcome until they are still. Tarl Cabot and the small men, led a column of Marchers, by baiting them with fresh meat, the ants, weaving like a whispering black snake through the jungle until they overran an encampment of the Mamba people, Cabot's intended target.
